Luxury Hotels in Sofia: 12 Five-Star Stays I'd Book
Most of Sofia's luxury hotels sit in three places: around Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, in the old Roman center by St Nedelya Square, and along the south end of Vitosha Boulevard near NDK. Nearly all are five-stars with a spa, and several have a rooftop bar. These are the 12 I'd book, with where each one sits, what its spa and pool are like and who it suits.
Sofia's luxury hotels at a glance
Nine of the 12 stand in the center, by the cathedral or near NDK, and seven have a pool. The other three are in Lozenets and Mladost, further from the sights.

Five-star hotels by Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
The streets around Alexander Nevsky Cathedral hold three of the city's best five-stars. From any of them you walk to the cathedral in a few minutes, to Sofia University and the National Gallery, and to the center in about 10.
Sense Hotel Sofia

Sense Hotel Sofia is at 16 Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard, steps from the cathedral, and it is a member of Design Hotels. It has 71 rooms in smoked glass, polished wood and low light, with big windows and very little clutter.
The rooftop bar is glass-walled and looks straight at the golden domes of Alexander Nevsky. Downstairs, the spa has a long, low-lit indoor pool in stainless steel, a sauna, a steam room and a gym with Technogym machines. Aqua gym sessions run with a trainer. The restaurant cooks Mediterranean fusion. Sofia University metro station is about 400 m away.
For a first trip and for couples, this is the one I'd book. If you would rather sleep in a house of 9 suites, Sofia's boutique hotels include Oborishte 63, a 1930s residence a short walk from the cathedral.
Hyatt Regency Sofia

Hyatt Regency Sofia is on Vasil Levski Square, next to Doctor's Garden and a short walk from the cathedral. It has 183 rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, and many have balconies over the garden.
The spa, Ortus Wellness, has an indoor hydrotherapy pool, a hammam, a steam room, a salt therapy room, and Finnish and bio saunas, plus a 24/7 gym. The Scene, the rooftop bar, looks over the city to Vitosha. The restaurant serves modern Italian food.
I'd pick the Hyatt for a couple's weekend where the spa and the rooftop are most of the plan. It also runs a paid airport shuttle, and the airport is about 9 km away.
InterContinental Sofia

InterContinental Sofia is at 4 Narodno Sabranie Square, beside the parliament, with front-row views of the cathedral domes. Its 198 rooms put the museums, the theaters and the center within an easy walk. I'd call it the best-placed hotel in the city.
It has two restaurants, a Club Lounge and a spa and wellness area with a sauna.
Five-star hotels in the historic center
The center around St Nedelya Square and the City Garden stands on the Roman town of Serdica. Serdika metro station and the main sights are a few minutes on foot from all four hotels here, so these are the ones I'd pick without a car.
Sofia Balkan Palace

Sofia Balkan Palace is the neoclassical landmark at 5 Sveta Nedelya Square, with 256 rooms. Inside are marble floors, sweeping staircases and chandeliers, and the building has the feel of an old grand hotel.
It stands over the ruins of Serdica, with Roman remains still visible beneath the property. Serdika metro station is next door. The Rotunda of St George and St Nedelya Cathedral are a minute or two away on foot. The rooms are less modern than at the newer five-stars, so book it for the building and the location.
Grand Hotel Sofia

Grand Hotel Sofia faces the City Garden, beside the Ivan Vazov National Theater, and Serdika metro and the cathedral are both about 5 minutes away on foot. It has 122 rooms and a collection of more than 400 original oil paintings on its walls.
Shades of Red, the restaurant, looks over the City Garden, and the Grand Café has an open-air terrace for coffee in summer. There is a fitness and health center. The style is classic, and with the National Theater next door it is the hotel I'd book for a trip built around opera and theater in Sofia.
Arena di Serdica
Arena di Serdica is a five-star in the center with a Roman amphitheater inside it. The remains of the amphitheater of Serdica were found while the hotel was being built, and the lobby now wraps around them.
The building itself is contemporary, with two restaurants and a bar around the ruins. I'd book it if you like the idea of walking past a Roman amphitheater on your way to breakfast.
Juno Hotel Sofia

Juno Hotel Sofia opened in May 2023 at 40 Ivan Denkoglu Street, and like Sense it is a member of Design Hotels. It has 35 rooms in a Scandinavian look: pale wood, clean lines, and soft grays, whites and forest greens.
There is a spa with a sauna and massages, a gym, a 24-hour front desk and airport transfers, and the Archaeological Museum, the Ivan Vazov National Theater and the Banya Bashi Mosque are all close. Cookó, the restaurant, is known for its weekend brunch. Juno has fewer resort-style extras than the big hotels, so I'd book it for the design.
Big hotels near NDK and South Park
The south end of Vitosha Boulevard, around the National Palace of Culture, has two large full-service hotels. The Millennium stands on the boulevard itself. The Hilton is a 5-minute walk from its shops and about 20 minutes on foot from the cathedral.
Grand Hotel Millennium Sofia

Grand Hotel Millennium is the 30-floor glass tower at 89B Vitosha Boulevard, between NDK and South Park. The rooms are large, with floor-to-ceiling windows over the city or Vitosha, and rainfall showers.
It works like a small vertical town: about 10 restaurants, cafes and bars, including the sky bars Ozone and The Sphere, a 1,500 sq m fitness center and even a helipad. The wellness floor has a panoramic pool, a hydromassage hot tub, aroma and infrared saunas, a salt steam bath and a Finnish sauna. I'd book it if you plan to spend real time inside the hotel.
Hilton Sofia

Hilton Sofia is at 1 Bulgaria Boulevard, on the edge of South Park and opposite NDK. Its 259 rooms are renovated in earthy tones, and the windows open over the park, the skyline or Vitosha.
The spa has a sauna and a small indoor pool, the gym has Technogym machines, and there is an executive lounge and EV charging. OXBO serves a big breakfast buffet, and Regale Bar is the evening spot. It suits families, with South Park next door, and anyone arriving by car.
Quiet five-stars in Lozenets
Lozenets is the leafy, well-off district about 4 km south of the center. Both of these hotels trade a walk to the sights for space, greenery and calm. Hotel Marinela has the metro at its door, and Maison Sofia is a short taxi ride from the center.
Maison Sofia, MGallery

Maison Sofia is at 36 Atanas Dukov Street, near Loven Park and Paradise Mall. It sits in a group of low-rise buildings among mature gardens, with a fountain in the garden and balconies over the courtyard. It feels like a country house hidden in the city.
The style is warm and traditional. The wellness area has an indoor pool, a sauna and a gym, and the spa closes early in the evening, so swim before dinner. I'd book it for a long weekend of pool, garden and sleep, with one or two trips into the center.
Hotel Marinela Sofia

Hotel Marinela is at 100 James Bourchier Boulevard, by James Bourchier metro station. It was built to the design of the former Japanese Hotel New Otani, and it still has a Japanese garden.
It is a big complex. Inside are more than 6 restaurants, 4 bars, a casino, an indoor pool, a fitness club and one of the largest spa centers in the city. The rooms are uneven in quality, so it works best for groups, events and anyone who wants many places to eat under one roof.
A five-star near the airport
Mladost, on the east side of the city, is where I'd look for a five-star the night before an early flight.
Crowne Plaza Sofia

Crowne Plaza Sofia is at 111 Aleksandar Malinov Boulevard in Mladost, next to Business Park Sofia and close to a metro station. It has an indoor pool, two restaurants and free parking.
The center is a metro ride away, so I'd book it for that last night or for a work trip to the business park, and the trip from Sofia Airport is short from here.
Spas and pools at Sofia's five-stars
Seven of the 12 hotels have a pool, and Juno and the InterContinental have a spa without one.
| Hotel | Pool | Spa highlights |
|---|---|---|
| Hyatt Regency Sofia | Indoor hydrotherapy pool | Hammam, salt room, Finnish and bio saunas, 24/7 gym |
| Sense Hotel Sofia | Long indoor pool | Sauna, steam room, aqua gym with a trainer |
| Grand Hotel Millennium | Panoramic pool | Hot tub, infrared and aroma saunas, salt steam bath |
| Hotel Marinela | Indoor pool | One of the largest spa centers in the city |
| Maison Sofia | Indoor pool | Sauna, gym, garden |
| Hilton Sofia | Small indoor pool | Sauna, Technogym gym |
| Crowne Plaza Sofia | Indoor pool | Pool only |
| Juno Hotel Sofia | None listed | Sauna, massages |
| InterContinental Sofia | None listed | Sauna, wellness area |
For a pool in the center, it comes down to Sense or the Hyatt. Sense has the better-looking pool, long and low-lit, and the Hyatt has more to do around it.
Rooftop bars and views
Three of these hotels have a bar worth going up to. Sense has the cathedral, the Hyatt's The Scene has the city and Vitosha, and the Millennium has two sky bars, Ozone and The Sphere, high above the city.
I'd pick the hotel for its rooms and go up to the other two rooftops for a drink before dinner at one of the best restaurants in Sofia.
Which luxury hotel suits your trip
- A first visit. Sense Hotel Sofia or the InterContinental, for the cathedral on your doorstep and the center on foot.
- A spa weekend. Hyatt Regency Sofia in the center, or Grand Hotel Millennium for the panoramic pool.
- History and grand rooms. Sofia Balkan Palace or Grand Hotel Sofia, both by the old Roman center.
- Families and drivers. Hilton Sofia by South Park, or Maison Sofia for gardens and quiet.
- An early flight. Crowne Plaza Sofia, out by Business Park with free parking.
If Sofia is the first night of a ski trip to Borovets, the Hilton or the Crowne Plaza makes the most sense. Both are easy to leave by car in the morning.
Skip the big five-stars if you want a place of a dozen rooms: the best hotels in Sofia include DOT Sofia, 11 apartments by the Women's Market, many with terraces over the city. Skip Lozenets and the Crowne Plaza on a short first trip, because you will spend your time getting to the center.
What a luxury hotel in Sofia costs
A luxury hotel in Sofia costs about €150 a night, against about €70 for a good mid-range hotel. That buys a five-star room, and at most of these hotels a spa or a pool too. Summer is the busy season. I'd book as early as you can for June to September, when the best rooms sell out first.
Breakfast is not always in the rate. The InterContinental's is the one I'd pay extra for.
Seven of these hotels are in the areas I'd pick for where to stay in Sofia on a first trip, the center and the streets around the cathedral. A single metro ticket from the airport costs €0.80, and Serdika station puts you a few minutes from four of them.
Key takeaways
- Book Sense Hotel Sofia for a first trip or a couple's stay, and the Hyatt Regency for a spa weekend.
- Four of the 12 stand in the old Roman center, a few minutes from Serdika metro.
- Seven have a pool, and the Lozenets and Mladost hotels need a taxi or the metro to reach the sights.
- At the InterContinental, ask in writing for the renovated wing.
- Expect about €150 a night, and book early for June to September.
