The Best Viewpoints in Sofia: 9 Places to See the City
Sofia lies flat in a wide valley with Vitosha rising 2,290 m on its southern edge, so the best views of the city come from the mountain looking down. The easy ones come from squares and rooftop bars in the center. These are the 9 viewpoints I'd pick, with what each one shows, how to get there, what it costs and which one I'd choose for sunset.

Mountain viewpoints on Vitosha
The widest views of Sofia come from Vitosha Mountain, which rises straight out of the southern suburbs. All four of these are free, and all of them need daylight, decent shoes and a look at the weather first.
1. Kamen Del
Kamen Del is my favorite view of Sofia. It is the rocky top you can see from the main streets of the city, and from up there the grid of Sofia spreads out below you on the plain. The quickest and easiest way up starts at Aleko hut, with signs in Bulgarian and English, and the walk takes under 2 hours on a nearly flat trail across the peat reserve.

Because the rock faces the city, it is at its best in late-afternoon light. Start back to Aleko before dark, because the last stretch to the top crosses a boulder field.
2. Kopitoto and the TV tower
Kopitoto is the hill above the western suburbs that carries the Vitosha TV tower, built in 1985 at 1,345 m. The tower is closed, so you go for the view from the meadow and the old lift station around its base, which look out over Sofia's western districts.

A taxi is the easy way up, at about €25 to €30 there and back with the driver waiting. On foot, take tram 5 to the end of the line in Knyazhevo and climb for 2 to 2.5 hours, about 700 m up.
A new panoramic platform for Kopitoto was announced by Sofia Municipality and the Ministry of Agriculture in 2026, but for now it exists only as a plan.
3. Cherni Vrah
Cherni Vrah is the summit of Vitosha at 2,290 m, and on a clear day it shows you the most: Sofia laid out like a map to the north, the Balkan range beyond it, and Rila to the south. It is 1.5 to 2 hours' walk from Aleko hut on a red-marked path.

This one costs you most of a day, and the weather decides whether you see anything. Thunderstorms build on summer afternoons, so I'd climb in the morning. The Cherni Vrah hike ends at the weather station on the summit, where a small teahouse opens at weekends.
4. Boyana Waterfall trail
The trail from Boyana Church up to Boyana Waterfall is a forest walk with views over Sofia from its higher bends. You get the city framed against the foothills, then the waterfall itself, which drops 25 m and runs fullest in spring.

Take bus 64 from Vitosha metro station to Boyana, and walk up past Boyana Church, the UNESCO-listed church at the foot of the trail. The gentler green-marked path takes about 1.5 hours to the waterfall. I'd pick this one for a half day, because the view, the waterfall and the church all fit into one loop.
Viewpoints in central Sofia
The center is flat, so its views are about framing, with Vitosha or a gold dome at the end of the line. Both of these are free and open at any hour.
5. NDK and its gardens
The National Palace of Culture, NDK, stands at the south end of Vitosha Boulevard, and its terraces and gardens give the best city-to-mountain view in the center. From the terraces, Bulgaria Boulevard runs straight south toward Vitosha, with the mountain closing the view. The fountains and the lighting make it just as good after dark.

Entry is free and the gardens are open 24 hours. Sofia's metro stops at NDK station, on the edge of the gardens. I'd come at dusk, when the mountain goes dark and the boulevard lights come on.
6. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral square
The open square around Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is wide enough to fit the gold-domed cathedral into a single frame.

Go at first light, when the gold domes catch the morning sun and the square is still empty. For a closer shot where the cathedral fills the frame, stand on the low rise by St Sofia Church next door.
Rooftop bars with a view of Sofia
Sofia's rooftop bars are the easy way to see the center from above, for the price of a drink. Of all Sofia's rooftop bars, these three are the ones I'd pick for the view.
7. Sense Rooftop Bar

Sense Rooftop Bar sits on top of the Sense Hotel at 16 Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard, and its terrace looks straight at the domes of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. That angle on the cathedral is the reason to go: it is the cleanest framed shot of the domes in the city. Cocktails run about €10 to €14.
8. Ozone Skybar at Grand Hotel Millennium

Ozone Skybar & Lounge is on floor 29 of Grand Hotel Millennium Sofia, with two panoramic terraces. It is the pick if you want height and comfort over a hike.
9. The Scene at Hyatt Regency

The Scene Rooftop Bar & Terrace sits on top of the Hyatt Regency Sofia on Vasil Levski Square, 7 floors up. You can see the cathedral from its outdoor terrace, though less directly than from Sense.
The best viewpoint for sunset in Sofia
For sunset I'd go to Kamen Del or Kopitoto. Both face the city from Vitosha, and you watch Sofia's lights come on below as the sky goes dark. Kopitoto is the easier of the two, because a taxi can take you to the top and wait.
In the center, NDK is the best free sunset spot, with Vitosha going dark at the end of the boulevard. Sense gives you golden light on the cathedral domes, at the price of a cocktail.
| Sunset plan | Effort | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Kamen Del | Bus 66 to Aleko and under 2 hours' walk | Bus ticket |
| Kopitoto | Taxi up and back | About €25 to €30 |
| NDK | Metro to NDK station | Free |
| Sense Rooftop Bar | Elevator, table booked | About €10 to €14 a cocktail |

Tips for a clear view of Sofia
Haze is what ruins a view of Sofia, and it can sit over the valley even on a dry, sunny day. The mountain viewpoints suffer most when the air is thick, because the city is farther away.
Mountain weather moves fast. Fog can come down in any month and snow can lie on Cherni Vrah until mid-June, so bring a warm layer and start down from the mountain viewpoints while it is still light. A taxi is the easiest way to the mountain viewpoints on a weekday, when bus 66 runs less often, and Sofia's taxis show their tariff on a side window.
