The Best Hotels in Sofia: 12 I'd Book in 2026

Sofia's best hotels face its cathedral, sit on Roman ruins or hide in quiet streets. These are the 12 I'd book.

Sofia's best hotels cluster around Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the old Roman center, with two quiet ones further out in Lozenets and Boyana. They range from 9 suites in a 1930s house to a 30-floor tower near NDK. These are the 12 I'd book, grouped by type, with where each one sits, what it does best and who it suits.

Five-star hotels by Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

The streets around Alexander Nevsky Cathedral hold Sofia's big international hotels. You walk out of the door to the cathedral, the National Gallery and Sofia University, and the center is 10 minutes away on foot.

Sense Hotel Sofia

A guest room at Sense Hotel Sofia, with a double bed, two armchairs and a floor-to-ceiling window
Photo: Google Maps

Sense Hotel Sofia is on Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard, steps from the cathedral. For a first trip, this is the one. The interiors are smoked glass, polished wood and low lighting, and the rooms have big windows and minimalist furniture.

The rooftop is a glass-walled lounge and bar that looks straight at the golden domes of Alexander Nevsky, and the spa downstairs has a long, low-lit indoor pool, a sauna, a steam room and a fitness area. The restaurant serves Mediterranean fusion food. It leans a little business-luxe, so couples who want a cozy boutique feel may prefer Oborishte 63.

Hyatt Regency Sofia

Photo: Google Maps

Hyatt Regency Sofia is on Vasil Levski Square, a short walk from the cathedral. The design is clean and calm, with natural textures, a neutral palette and floor-to-ceiling windows over the city or the parks nearby.

The highlight is the rooftop bar and restaurant, with skyline views and the cathedral domes in the distance, and Vitosha behind the city on a clear evening. There is a spa and wellness center for the end of a sightseeing day. I'd pick the Hyatt for a couple's weekend, when the rooftop and the spa are most of the plan.

InterContinental Sofia

Photo: Google Maps

InterContinental Sofia faces Narodno Sabranie Square, beside the parliament, with front-row views of the cathedral domes. I'd call it the best-placed hotel in Sofia, with the museums and theaters of the center an easy walk away.

It has two restaurants, a Club Lounge and a wellness center. The breakfast is good.

Historic hotels on the Roman ruins of Serdica

Modern Sofia is built on top of Serdica, the Roman town whose ruins you see through glass panels around Serdika metro station. Two hotels sit right on it.

Sofia Balkan Palace

Photo: Google Maps

Sofia Balkan Palace is the neoclassical landmark on Independence Square. Inside, it has marble floors, sweeping staircases and chandeliers, and the rooms add modern comforts to a classic style.

The hotel stands over the ruins of ancient Serdica, with Roman remains still visible beneath the property, and the Rotunda of St George, St Nedelya Cathedral and the Presidency are all around it. I'd book it if you like heritage and formal service more than design.

Arena di Serdica

Arena di Serdica is a five-star in the center with a Roman amphitheater inside. The remains of the amphitheater of Serdica were found while the hotel was being built, and the lobby now wraps around them.

Around the ruins are two restaurants and a bar. The building itself is contemporary, and the Central Market Hall and most of the center's sights are a short walk away.

Design hotels in the center

These three are small and built around design and art, and none has more than 35 rooms. Sofia's boutique hotels run from restored 1930s houses to industrial-style lofts with exposed brick.

Juno Sofia

Juno Sofia is a member of Design Hotels, with a Scandinavian look: clean lines, pale wood, and soft greys, whites and forest greens. It has 35 rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, good soundproofing and plush linens, plus a spa with a sauna and massages, a gym and a 24-hour front desk.

Cookó, the restaurant downstairs, turns into one of the most sought-after brunch spots in Sofia at weekends, with a mix of stylish locals and travelers at the tables. The hotel is near the Ivan Vazov National Theater, and the rest of the center is a short walk away.

DOT Sofia

DOT Sofia is an aparthotel behind red steel shutters in the Women's Market area. It has just 11 apartments, with floor-to-ceiling windows, kitchens, laundry facilities, underfloor heating and coffee machines, and many have private terraces over the city or toward Vitosha. Works of contemporary Bulgarian art hang in the common areas.

Check-in is mostly contactless, and the team answers on WhatsApp. Komat, the restaurant, cooks modern Bulgarian food. For a group, the three-story Penthouse sleeps up to 5 and has a private rooftop terrace with an outdoor kitchen. Serdika metro station is a few minutes away.

Oborishte 63 The Art Boutique Hotel

Photo: Google Maps

Oborishte 63 is a restored 1930s private house on a leafy corner of Oborishte, near the cathedral and Zaimov Park. It has 9 suites, each inspired by a Bulgarian artist, with its own colors, textures and furniture.

Breakfast is served in your suite, and Boho, the restaurant, does European plates. There is a garden and a terrace lounge. It is the most private hotel on this list. For couples who want quiet streets with the cathedral, Zaimov Park and the center's restaurants all within walking distance, it is my pick. Parking costs extra, and the hotel arranges an airport shuttle on request.

Big hotels near NDK and Vitosha Boulevard

The south end of Vitosha Boulevard, around the National Palace of Culture, has two big full-service hotels, both within a 5-minute walk of the boulevard's shops.

Grand Hotel Millennium

Photo: Google Maps

Grand Hotel Millennium is the 30-floor glass and steel tower just off Vitosha Boulevard near NDK. The rooms are large, with floor-to-ceiling windows over Sofia or Vitosha, and rainfall showers.

It works like a small vertical town, with several restaurants and cafes and two sky bars, Ozone and The Sphere, high above the city. The wellness center has a hydromassage hot tub, aroma and infrared saunas, a salt steam bath, a Finnish sauna and a pool with panoramic views. I'd book it for the views and the spa.

Hilton Sofia

The Hilton Sofia tower behind its lawn and car park, with Vitosha Mountain in the distance
Photo: Google Maps

Hilton Sofia is on Bulgaria Boulevard at the edge of South Park, opposite NDK, a 5-minute walk from the shops of Vitosha Boulevard and about 20 minutes on foot from the cathedral. Its 259 rooms are newly renovated, in earthy tones, with windows that open over the park, the skyline or Vitosha.

The spa has a sauna and a small indoor pool, and OXBO, the restaurant, serves a big international breakfast buffet with mountain views. Regale Bar is the evening spot. It is a big, efficient business hotel, good for work trips, and the park next door suits families.

Quiet hotels outside the center

Both of these trade a walk to the sights for space and calm. I'd pick them for a second trip, or for a trip built around parks and hiking.

Maison Sofia

The garden courtyard of Maison Sofia, with a glass conservatory entrance between the hotel's balconied wings
Photo: Google Maps

Maison Sofia is in Lozenets, the leafy district south of the center that borders Borisova Gradina. It sits in a series of low-rise buildings among mature gardens, and it feels like a country house hidden inside the city.

The style is warm and traditional, with soft colors and classic furniture. The rooms are big and bright, and many have balconies onto the garden courtyard. A compact indoor pool, a gym and a sauna make up the wellness area. Downtown is a short taxi ride away.

Casa Boyana

A double bed, gold patterned sofa and red carpet in an attic room at Casa Boyana
Photo: Google Maps

Casa Boyana is a small four-star in Boyana, at the foot of Vitosha Mountain, about 15 minutes from the city center. The rooms are traditional, with rich colors, thick carpets and patterned fabrics. A small spa offers a sauna and massages, and the evenings are spent in the bar and the restaurant.

It suits a second trip, when you have seen the center and want Vitosha Mountain on your doorstep. Boyana Church, the UNESCO-listed medieval church, is in the same district.

Which hotel for which trip

  • A first visit to Sofia. Sense Hotel Sofia or the InterContinental, for the cathedral on your doorstep and the center on foot.
  • A couple's weekend. Oborishte 63 for privacy, or the Hyatt Regency for the rooftop and the spa.
  • Families and groups. DOT Sofia for its apartments and kitchens, or the Hilton for a big hotel by a park.
  • History lovers. Sofia Balkan Palace or Arena di Serdica, both on the Roman city.
  • Views. Grand Hotel Millennium, with 30 floors and two sky bars.

Skip the big five-stars if you want a small hotel where the staff know your name; the three design hotels do that better. Skip Maison Sofia and Casa Boyana on a short first trip, because you will spend your time in taxis.

What a hotel in Sofia costs

A luxury hotel in Sofia costs about €150 a night, a good mid-range hotel about €70 and a simple hotel about €40. At the top end, that buys a spa and a rooftop bar at most of Sofia's luxury hotels. Summer is the busy season and the best rooms sell out early, so I'd book as early as you can for June to September.

Most of the hotels I'd book are in the center and Oborishte, the two areas I'd pick for where to stay in Sofia on a first trip. On a backpacker budget, Sofia's hostels sell dorm beds from about €5 a night in the same streets.

Key takeaways

  • Sense Hotel Sofia is my overall pick for its rooftop view of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and its indoor pool.
  • Sofia Balkan Palace and Arena di Serdica are the hotels for history, both built over Roman Serdica.
  • Juno Sofia, DOT Sofia and Oborishte 63 are the small design hotels with the most character.
  • At the InterContinental, ask for the renovated wing.
  • Expect about €150 a night for luxury and about €70 for a good mid-range hotel.
