Sofia to Veliko Tarnovo: Bus, Train or Car in 2026

Veliko Tarnovo is about 3 hours from Sofia by bus. The 2026 departures, the train change and the drive, compared.

Sofia to Veliko Tarnovo is one of the easiest long trips in Bulgaria: 224 km northeast to the medieval capital, with a bus leaving Sofia almost every hour of the day. This guide covers the 2026 bus timetable and fares, why the train needs a change, the drive on the Hemus motorway with the stops worth making, and whether to go for a day or a night.

Sofia to Veliko Tarnovo at a glance

Veliko Tarnovo sits in the hills of north central Bulgaria, on the far side of the Balkan range from Sofia. The bus is the default for good reason: it is direct, it runs all day and a ticket costs under €16.

Sofia to Veliko Tarnovo by bus

The bus is how I'd go. Three companies run the route, Grup Plus, Union Ivkoni and Biomet, and between them there are 17 departures a day. Most of the buses carry on to Varna, Shumen, Dobrich or the northern Black Sea resorts, so Veliko Tarnovo is a stop on the way east.

Where the buses leave from in Sofia

Every Veliko Tarnovo bus leaves from Sofia Central Bus Station, at 100 Knyaginya Maria Luiza Boulevard. It is a glass building right next to Central Railway Station, north of the center.

Do not confuse it with Serdika bus station, which stands next door and runs other routes. If you are late, you will not have time to walk between the two. Each bus leaves from a numbered sector, sectors 6 to 10 for this route, and the station timetable lists the sector for every departure.

For a day in Veliko Tarnovo, the 06:30 and 08:30 buses are the ones to take, arriving at 10:00 and 11:50. The 10:30 bus is the slowest, at about 4 hours 20 minutes. Timetables change, so check the times on the bus station's own site a day or two before you go.

Tickets and booking

You can buy tickets at the company counters inside Sofia Central Bus Station or online through the station's site. Seats are assigned, and buying online lets you pick one. On summer weekends and public holidays the route fills up with students, weekenders and visitors, so I'd book a day ahead then.

If you buy online, get to the station 30 minutes before departure. Some companies want you to check in at their counter, and that is also the moment to confirm your sector number.

The ride from Sofia to Veliko Tarnovo

The bus heads east on the Hemus motorway, crosses the Balkan range and drops into the hills on the far side. Plan on 3 to 3.5 hours in a modern coach. Keep a coin or two for the station toilets, which charge a small fee.

Arriving in Veliko Tarnovo

Most buses from Sofia pull into the South bus station, Avtogara Yug, and a few use the West bus station. Neither is in the old town, which sits around the gorge where big coaches cannot go.

From the South station, the old town is a short taxi ride or a local bus away. You can walk it with light bags, but the streets are steep and the walk is no fun with a suitcase. Take a taxi from a known company with the meter on, and skip any driver who quotes a fixed price before you get in.

Sofia to Veliko Tarnovo by train

There is no direct train from Sofia to Veliko Tarnovo. Trains on the main line from Sofia stop at Gorna Oryahovitsa, a railway junction about 10 km from Veliko Tarnovo, and you change there for the last stretch.

The ride from Sofia Central Railway Station to Gorna Oryahovitsa takes about 4 hours, through forested Balkan foothills, and costs about €8 to €14 in second class. Bulgarian State Railways runs several trains a day on the route. From Gorna Oryahovitsa you finish the trip on a local train, on city bus No. 10, which takes 20 to 25 minutes to the center, or by taxi.

Door to door, that comes to 4.5 to 5.5 hours, one to two hours longer than the bus. A few services run on from Gorna Oryahovitsa to Veliko Tarnovo station itself, which sits below the old town by the river, a steep uphill walk of 20 to 30 minutes from the center. City buses run into town from there too.

If you go by rail, check the timetable for trains in Bulgaria on the railway's own site the day before, and time your arrival at Gorna Oryahovitsa so you are not left waiting for the last connection in the evening. Gorna Oryahovitsa is also a stop on the daily trains to Bucharest and Istanbul, which makes Veliko Tarnovo an easy stage on the way from Sofia to Bucharest.

Driving from Sofia to Veliko Tarnovo

The drive takes 3 to 3.5 hours. You leave Sofia on the A2 Hemus motorway, but it is finished only as far as Yablanitsa, and east of there you drop onto ordinary two-lane road for the rest of the way. Veliko Tarnovo sits where the E772 from Sofia to Varna meets the E85 from Ruse to Burgas.

Bulgarian motorways need an e-vignette, bought online in a couple of minutes, and it is the first rule of getting around Bulgaria by car: check your rental has one. In Veliko Tarnovo, park at your hotel or outside the old town and walk; the old streets are narrow, steep and built on cliffs.

Two natural sights near the town of Lovech sit off the main road, and they fit one long drive together.

Devetashka Cave

Devetashka Cave is one of the largest karst caves in Bulgaria, a vast hall with holes in its roof that let in shafts of daylight. The entrance sits about 20 km off the E772.

The detour adds about 45 minutes of driving, and I'd allow at least an hour inside.

Krushuna Falls

Krushuna Falls is a run of travertine cascades in a narrow green gorge near the village of Krushuna, about 16 km from Devetashka Cave. A marked red trail climbs past the falls in about an hour.

It adds about 30 minutes to the drive. Go on a weekday if you can, when the trail is quieter. With both stops, the drive from Sofia becomes a full day, and you reach Veliko Tarnovo in time for dinner.

A longer southern route through Kazanlak and over the Shipka Pass passes close to the Buzludzha monument, if you would rather see that on the way.

Shared rides from Sofia to Veliko Tarnovo

BlaBlaCar has drivers offering seats on this corridor most days, and a seat often costs less than the bus. Seats come and go from day to day, so confirm the pickup point and time with the driver before you book. A taxi or a private car with a driver takes about as long as driving yourself and makes sense only for a group with luggage.

My call is the bus for a straight trip, the car if you want to stop on the way or carry on around the country, and the train only for the ride itself.

Day trip or overnight in Veliko Tarnovo?

Overnight. A day trip means 6 to 7 hours of travel for a few hours in town, and the evenings, with the old town lit up over the gorge, are the best part of Veliko Tarnovo. One night covers Tsarevets and the old town; two nights add Arbanasi and the river quarter.

If you only have a day, take the 06:30 bus, which arrives at 10:00, buy your return ticket at the South station straight away and go to Tsarevets first. Of all the day trips from Sofia, this one has one of the worst ratios of travel to sightseeing.

Getting to Sofia Central Bus Station

The Central Bus Station and Central Railway Station stand side by side, two stops north of Serdika II on the blue M2 line of the Sofia metro. Get off at Central Railway Station and walk next door.

From the airport, the metro from Sofia airport runs on the M4 to Serdika, where you change to the M2 toward Obelya and get off two stops later. A metered taxi from the airport's official desk to the stations costs about €14 to €15, and taxis in Sofia are cheap anywhere in the center if you use a known company.

Onward from Veliko Tarnovo

Veliko Tarnovo is a natural middle stop on a loop of Bulgaria. Buses to Plovdiv take about 2.5 hours, so you can come from the capital, stay a night or two and carry on south to Plovdiv without going back through Sofia.

Most Sofia buses carry on east to Varna, which they reach about 3.5 hours after Veliko Tarnovo, so the Bulgarian Black Sea coast is the other easy next stop. Bucharest is 160 km north, through Ruse and over the Danube.

Key takeaways

  • The 06:30 bus, in at 10:00, is the one for a day trip, and the 08:30 still gets you there before noon.
  • Go to Sofia Central Bus Station, next to Central Railway Station on the M2 metro line, and check your sector before boarding.
  • The train only makes sense for the ride itself, since the change at Gorna Oryahovitsa adds one to two hours.
  • Drive if you want Devetashka Cave and Krushuna Falls on the way; with the Hemus motorway ending at Yablanitsa, the car is no faster than the bus.
  • Buy the return ticket at the South bus station as soon as you arrive.
